Introduction to MUET

Hi everyone,

If you’re in Malaysia, MUET is a familiar English Test to all of us. The Malaysian University English Test is a compulsory test for students who wishes to further their studies in public or private  universities and colleges in Malaysia. Different universities set different target band scores for different courses.  Since 2012, MUET  seating are held three times in a year, in March, July and November. To all candidates out there, preparation is the key word to getting successful results and in achieving the band score required for university. What is Blended Learning?

What is Blended Learning?

Blended Learning is a combination of teaching and learning approach that aligns learning undertaken in face-to-face sessions with the learning opportunities created on the internet. Creativity of learning activities developed by educators will challenge our thinking as to how learning might be facilitated, creating new etiquettes of learning and teaching, and shifting the locus of control from the teacher to the learner (Littlejohn and Pegler, 2006, p4). In the 21st Century, Blended Learning approach is an approach that will enhance and extend the learning opportunities for our learners. The learners of the digital age.

Blended Learning is a blanket term for an approach, and the University sees that the following types of blend will be most useful in providing a complete learning environment for our students. These are:
  • full provision of module related documents in electronic format;
  • regular formative assessment with feedback,
  • opportunities to learn from each other collaboratively,
  • electronic personal development planning,
  • the opportunity to submit all appropriate summative assessments electronically,
  • and that all face to face learning is interactive,
The rationale for supporting each of these perspectives on blended learning is that every learner is able to:
  • have 24/7 access to all learning content, and to ensure equality of access;
  • gauge their progress against the learning outcomes, to receive supporting feedback on this progress, and for staff to have information on student progress;
  • participate in, and engage with interactive learning opportunities in her or his face-to-face learning sessions. There is no expectation that this need necessarily involve the use of technologies.
  • use asynchronous collaborative learning which extends the face to face learning, creating supportive learning networks, managed by learners at a time and place best suited to their needs;
  • understand better her or his learning process, act on feedback, so as to become more effective and successful, as well as collecting evidence on achievement to enhance our learners employability;
  • save time and paper, and provide feedback quickly to each learner.

Blended learning indeed will help maximise the learning potential of our learners. Institutions however, must play a vital role to encourage the use of technology in classroom by providing sufficient facilities in order to implement blended learning in the classroom.

Writing Effective Essays

YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT PAPER 4 OF THE MUET EXAMINATION IS – Writing (800/4)

Weightage                  : 30% 
Duration                      : 9o mins
Number of Questions : 2
Possible genre            : report, article, letter and essay
Rhetorical style           : analytical, descriptive, persuasive, argumentative

Question 1-interpretation of information based on specific stimuli provided. (150-200 words)
                   you’ll basically will be referring to chart or graph and other graphic organizers


Question 2- Extended writing based on a given topic(not less than 350 words)
                    You will not be given a selection of questions!. Only 1 essay to be written.


Elements of Effective Writing

1) Understand the question.

a) Before writing, read the questions carefully.
b) Underline the keywords.
c) Understand the question by asking WH-Questions:

                    Ask yourself  What to WRITE?– thesis statement and points
                                        Who is the AUDIENCE?                                     
                                        When is the TIME…in the past, present or future
                                       Where is the place or location?                                       
                                Why are you writing? –to inform, to persuade, to give opinion,to explain                                       
                                       How do you relate to the issue? Give opinion/view


So you must reflect before you write!
